Athletics 8, Rangers 3: McNeil's Homer Breaks the Tie

August 14, 2026 - West Sacramento - Jeff McNeil went 4-for-5, and the swing that mattered was the one after Texas had already tied it. A 400-foot homer, his fifth of the year, and a ball Statcast said would have been out in every MLB park. The Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 8-3, snapped a three-game slide, and remembered how to finish a game they had led 3-0 in the first.

They have still lost 12 of 15. Friday was the night that did not join the pile.

Cortes empties the bases. Burger empties the lead.

A hit batter, a single, and a walk loaded them for Carlos Cortes in the first. He drove a 1-2 slider from Kumar Rocker to right. Three runs. 3-0 before Texas had a hit that counted.

Rocker lasted five innings, four hits, three runs, five walks, three strikeouts. The walks were the problem. The Athletics did not need a crooked number later to make those free bases expensive.

Gage Jump held the 3-0 lead into the sixth. Then Jake Burger worked a full count and hit a 428-foot, three-run homer to left-center. Tie game. Jump's night: 5 1/3 innings, three hits, three runs, four walks, one strikeout. The start was fine until Burger found the seats.

McNeil, then Butler, then the eighth

McNeil put the Athletics back in front. Lawrence Butler added a 411-foot homer in the seventh. Three more runs came across in the eighth. Four relievers combined for 3 2/3 innings and one hit. Luis Medina got the win (3-3). Chase Silseth took the loss (3-3) after one inning and one run.

Texas finished with four hits and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Burger's homer was the whole rally. Line: Athletics 8 runs, 9 hits, 2 errors; Rangers 3 runs, 4 hits, 1 error.

The first inning was the Athletics playing the walk-and-wait game Rocker has been living with. The sixth was Burger reminding West Sacramento that a 3-0 lead is not a final. The rest was McNeil refusing to let the night turn into loss 13 in 16. Four hits from the two-hole, three RBI, and a homer that did not need a friendly porch. Butler's seventh-inning shot was the extra run a bullpen likes to inherit.

A win that does not rewrite the standings

The Athletics are 48-74. Texas is 60-63. Nobody in the American League is checking Sutter Health Park for a wild-card update. McNeil's night is still the thing you take from a Friday in West Sacramento: a 4-for-5 that answered a three-run homer instead of folding after it.

Saturday: Mackenzie Gore (6-9, 4.43) for Texas, J.T. Ginn (8-6, 3.41) for the Athletics.

I am not turning one home win into a trend. I am saying Burger tied it, and McNeil untied it, and that is a cleaner story than 12 losses in 15 games usually get.

AthX Engine angle

The Athletics finished with 16 AthX Engine team fantasy points, tied with Chicago and Houston for Friday's team lead. McNeil had 13 hitting fantasy points. Cortes had 6. Butler's homer scored 3. Medina had 6.33 pitching fantasy points for the win. Jump's start scored 1.33 after the three runs. Texas finished at -3 team fantasy points. Burger had 8 hitting fantasy points on the three-run shot.

A team board can love an 8-3 even when the starter does not finish it. AthX Engine scores what happened, not the narrative you wanted after the first inning.
