Athletics 6, Blue Jays 5: McNeil's Ninth-Inning Single Holds Off Toronto

Four-run lead, ninth-inning mess, walk-off anyway

September 7, 2026 - West Sacramento - Andrés Giménez homered to right-center in the ninth, and Sutter Health Park had a 5-5 game the Athletics had spent all night trying not to play. Jeff McNeil chopped a ball to short that Giménez could not turn into an out. Donovan Walton scored. Toronto challenged the play at first. The call stood. The A's won 6-5.

The Associated Press recap called it an infield single that scored the winning run after Oakland blew a four-run lead. Henry Bolte had already built that lead: a homer, three walks, three stolen bases, three runs. The ninth was McNeil finishing a night Bolte spent inventing.

Bolte, Gelof, and a 5-1 cushion

Bolte scored on Zack Gelof's ground-rule double in the first. An error on a play at the plate made it 2-0. Gelof's fielder's choice scored Bolte again in the third, and Carlos Cortes singled Gelof home. 4-1 after Alejandro Kirk had cut it to 2-1 with a solo homer in the second, his ninth.

Bolte's ninth homer of the year, a fly to right in the fifth, made it 5-1. He finished 1-for-2 with three walks, three steals, three runs, and the homer. Gelof went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases. That is an Athletics offense doing the things this park rewards: walks, steals, and one ball that leaves the yard.

Dylan Cease lasted five innings: four hits, five runs (four earned), two walks, six strikeouts, 94 pitches. He did not get a decision. The damage was Bolte on base and Gelof driving him in. Cease has had better September nights. This was not one of them.

Jacob Lopez started for Oakland and went six innings: seven hits, four runs, one walk, one strikeout, two homers. Kirk's solo and the seventh-inning rally sat on his line. He did not get a decision either. Luis Medina threw 1 2/3 scoreless. Hogan Harris got the last four outs and the win, even after Giménez tied it off him.

Toronto's seventh, then Giménez's ninth

Kazuma Okamoto homered to left in the seventh, his 29th. Giménez doubled Nathan Lukes home. Josh Smith lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Ernie Clement. 5-4. The four-run lead was a one-run game, and the Blue Jays still had the ninth.

Giménez went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBI, and a run. The ninth-inning solo shot was his ninth homer of the year. Kirk had two hits. Okamoto walked twice and homered. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 1-for-4. Toronto is 72-73 and spent the late innings looking like a club that expected to leave California with a win. Louis Varland inherited the bottom of the ninth, walked two, and allowed McNeil's chopper. He took the loss.

The Athletics are 58-87. A walk-off against a wild-card-adjacent Toronto club does not rewrite a season. It does mean Bolte's on-base night and McNeil's 90-foot sprint were enough on a Monday in Sacramento.

Sutter Health Park was clear and 84. Cease threw 94 pitches and left down 5-1. Brendon Little, Paul Sewald, Mason Fluharty, and Tyler Rogers kept it there through the eighth. Then Harris inherited a one-run lead, Giménez tied it, and Varland walked into a ninth with the tying run already in and the winning run on third. Walton had reached. Bolte was on base again. McNeil's chopper to short was not hit hard. It was hit in the right place, and Giménez could not beat him to first. Toronto challenged. The call stood. Walk-off.

Cortes had two hits and an RBI. Lopez's two homers allowed were Kirk and the seventh-inning traffic that became Okamoto, Giménez, and Smith's sac fly. Oakland led 5-1 after five and still needed the last at-bat. That is this A's club in one Monday: Bolte creating runs, the bullpen leaking one, McNeil ending it.

AthX Engine after the baseball

AthX Engine credited Bolte with 17 hitting fantasy points, the top hitter on the 11-game slate. A homer, three walks, and three steals will do that. Gelof added 9 hitting FP. Giménez scored 8 hitting FP in a loss. Oakland posted 10 team FP, fifth among Monday's clubs.

Fantasy points grade what Bolte did. Share price is what traders will pay, and dynamic pricing is how that number moves. They are related. They are not the same thing.
