Angels 7, Rangers 0: Ureña Shuts Texas Down After deGrom Exits

August 13, 2026 - Anaheim - Jacob deGrom had not allowed five hits in an inning since September 5, 2017. The Los Angeles Angels did it to him in the second on Thursday, then watched Texas take him out with right triceps fatigue. Walbert Ureña threw six scoreless behind it. Mike Trout and Denzer Guzman each had three hits. Final: 7-0, a series win, and three in a row for a club that spent most of the summer stuck at four runs or fewer.

Fifteen hits. A five-hitter the other way. The Rangers left 60-62. The Angels improved to 48-74 and took the season series.

Five hits in the second, then the trainer

deGrom escaped a two-on jam in the first. The second was 32 pitches and a different game. Guzman singled. Josh Lowe doubled. Adam Frazier singled Guzman in. Lowe tried to score from second and Wyatt Langford threw him out. Wade Meckler singled. Trout singled. 2-0.

That was deGrom's night: two innings, six hits, two earned, three strikeouts, the loss that made him 8-8. He had been dealing with a left hip and glute issue since the All-Star break. The triceps is new. Texas will sort that out in the next 48 hours. The Angels did not wait.

Four in the fifth, then Siri again

Jordan Montgomery inherited a 2-0 game and loaded the bases in the fifth on singles by Trout, Nolan Schanuel, and Vaughn Grissom. Guzman beat out an infield single. Lowe singled in two. Jose Siri grounded out to make it 6-0.

Siri added an RBI single in the seventh. 7-0. Lowe finished with two hits and two RBI. Frazier had two hits and an RBI. Trout's three singles were his second straight three-hit game. The Angels had 10-plus hits for the first time in a stretch that had been all contact, no damage.

Ureña improved to 8-8 with a 2.67 ERA: six innings, two hits, two walks, five strikeouts. Since May 1 he has a 2.43 ERA in 18 games and has allowed one run or fewer in 13 of those starts. José Fermin, Tayler Saucedo, and Sammy Peralta each threw a scoreless inning.

A bad team that just took a series from Texas

I am not turning 48-74 into a playoff club because they hung 15 hits on a short deGrom start. I am noting that they have now beaten Texas three straight, that Trout is hitting, and that Ureña is quietly one of the better rookie arms in the league. Parker Messick's 2.59 ERA is the only qualified rookie mark better than Ureña's 2.67.

The Rangers still sit in the AL wild-card conversation. An ace leaving after two innings with a new arm issue is the part of Thursday that travels.

AthX Engine angle

The Angels finished with 17 AthX Engine team fantasy points, tied for second on Thursday. Ureña had 23 pitching fantasy points, fifth on the pitcher board. Texas finished at -8 team fantasy points.

Track Trout, Ureña, and the Angels on the marketplace. AthX Engine grades the night. Price is what the market pays tomorrow.
