Angels 10, Yankees 1: Ureña Strikes Out Eight, Grissom Drives In Four

Seven innings, eight punchouts, no walks

August 31, 2026 – Anaheim – The Los Angeles Angels had not won at home since August 15. They had lost seven in a row everywhere. Walbert Ureña treated that like someone else's problem.

He threw seven innings, five hits, one run, eight strikeouts, zero walks. Vaughn Grissom went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Mike Trout drove in two. Christian Moore drove in two more. The Angels beat the New York Yankees 10-1, 12 hits to 6, and New York donated three errors.

Ureña struck out eight over seven and Grissom drove in four in a 10-1 win that snapped LA’s seven-game skid. Spencer Jones hit the only Yankees run, a solo homer.

Rodríguez never saw the fifth

Elmer Rodríguez (0-3) lasted 3 2/3 innings, four hits, four earned, five strikeouts, three walks. It was the shortest of his six career starts. He hit Tyler Heineman and Oswald Peraza. He left with the game already gone.

Grissom singled Wade Meckler and Heineman into a 1-0 lead in the third. In the fourth, Peraza scored on Zach Neto's single to left. Trout singled home Heineman and Neto. 4-0. Trout's first multi-RBI hit since a two-run homer on July 8.

Jones answered in the fifth, a solo shot to right-center (398 feet) for New York's only run. Ureña did not walk anyone around it. That was the Yankees' night on offense. They went 0-for-1 with a runner in scoring position.

Fulmer's throw, Caballero's two errors

Michael Fulmer inherited a 4-1 game and made it 6-1. Grissom doubled. Moore blooped an RBI double to shortstop. Moore then scored when Fulmer's pickoff throw to second sailed. Two runs, one earned.

The sixth was sloppier. Neto scored when José Caballero booted a Grissom grounder that could have been an inning-ending double play, then threw it away. 7-1. Caballero finished with two errors. Fulmer had the other. Three mistakes on a night New York managed six hits.

Luis Gil threw two innings and allowed one more. David Bednar got the eighth and it got loud. Grissom doubled off the left-field wall, scoring Siri and Trout. Moore singled Grissom home. 10-1. Bednar: one inning, four hits, three earned.

Grissom's card: 3-for-5, two runs, four RBI, two doubles. Trout: 2-for-5, one run, two RBI. Moore: 2-for-5, one run, two RBI. Neto had the RBI single that started the fourth. Los Angeles went 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position. New York did not.

Ureña, then the quiet innings

Ureña's game score sat at 71. Ninety-five pitches, 68 strikes. One homer, no free passes. He induced a double play and faced 25 hitters. Saucedo threw a 1-2-3 eighth on eight pitches. Weiman allowed a hit in the ninth and struck out two. The Angels staff walked nobody and struck out 10.

New York had scored 25 runs in consecutive wins over Boston over the weekend. Monday in Anaheim looked like a different club. Rodríguez threw 91 pitches to get 11 outs. Gil threw 39 pitches in two innings and still allowed a run. Bednar's eighth was the inning that turned a loss into a laugher.

The Yankees are still three games ahead of Boston for the top American League wild card and 4 1/2 behind Tampa Bay in the East. That standing survived the night. The box score did not flatter anyone in pinstripes. Jones's 398-foot homer was the only New York extra-base hit that scored.

The Angels are 53-85. A 10-1 home win does not rewrite August. It does end a week of losses and give Ureña a 9-9 record that looks like a rotation piece, not a September placeholder. Los Angeles's last home win before Monday was August 15. That is a long stretch of Angel Stadium nights that ended the other way.

The inning log is simple if you write it out. Third: Grissom single, 1-0. Fourth: Neto single, Trout two-run single, 4-0. Fifth: Jones's homer, Moore's double, Fulmer's throw, 6-1. Sixth: Caballero's two errors on one grounder, 7-1. Eighth: Grissom's wall double and Moore's single, 10-1. Los Angeles left 10 on base and still won by nine. That is a night the Yankees never threw a shutdown inning.

What's next

Gerrit Cole (7-3, 3.19) faces Grayson Rodriguez (4-5, 6.03) in the middle game. New York will try to forget the errors. Los Angeles will try to remember it can score 10 at home.
