Yankees Acquire Max Schuemann from Athletics for Luis Burgos

Yankees Acquire Max Schuemann from Athletics for Luis Burgos

The New York Yankees added another versatile depth option on Monday, acquiring infielder Max Schuemann from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Minor League right-hander Luis Burgos.

The Trade

  • Yankees receive: INF Max Schuemann
  • Athletics receive: RHP Luis Burgos (Minor League)
  • Schuemann, 28, will provide an additional bench choice for manager Aaron Boone, competing with Oswaldo Cabrera and Amed Rosario. Paul DeJong is also in camp as a non-roster invitee.

    Schuemann's Profile

In 2025 with the A's, Schuemann batted .197 (36-for-183) with two homers and 13 RBIs in 101 games. He appeared at second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions. Over parts of two Major League seasons with Oakland (2024-25), the right-handed batter has a .212/.306/.297 slash line with nine homers and 47 RBIs in 234 games.

    What the A's Get

Burgos, 20, logged a 3.39 ERA in 25 games (10 starts) over parts of two Minor League seasons in the Yankees' organization (2024-25). In 2025 he was 3-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 11 games (eight starts) for the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Bombers.

    Roster Moves

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated outfielder Yanquiel Fernández for assignment. Another move will add first baseman Paul Goldschmidt once his one-year, $4 million contract is finalized. The Yankees also outrighted Dom Hamel and Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; both have been invited to 2026 Major League Spring Training as non-roster invitees.
