New York pulled within four games of AL East-leading Tampa Bay. Baltimore dropped a fourth straight after briefly holding sole possession of the last wild-card spot.

A messy third, then clean power

The third inning opened with traffic and an error. Jones singled and scored when José Caballero forced a play that Gunnar Henderson could not finish. Ben Rice singled home a run. Heliot Ramos doubled home another. 3-0, two of them unearned.

Dylan Beavers answered with a solo shot in the fifth. 3-1. That was Baltimore's only run, and it did not last as a story.

Cole's eight strikeouts moved him one ahead of Roger Clemens for 12th on the Yankees' career list. The night after a disputed foul call on Pete Alonso, there was nothing left to argue about the scoreboard.

Yarbrough closed the door without a hit

Ryan Yarbrough relieved Cole and threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts for his third save. That is a full nine innings of control after the Orioles had already spent three nights trying to climb out of the same series hole.

Bradish allowed three earned runs and eight hits. The Orioles managed four hits as a club. Sweep mathematics are simple when the starter and the late innings both go quiet.
