Predators 5, Blues 2: Forsberg's First, a Penalty Shot, a Shorty

October 17, 2026 - Nashville - Jordan Binnington threw his stick. The officials gave Nashville a penalty shot instead of a 5-on-3. Jonathan Marchessault went five-hole at 8:40 of the first, and Bridgestone Arena had a 1-1 game it had not earned with even-strength traffic.

The Nashville Predators beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2. Nashville is 3-2-3, first win in four (0-1-2). St. Louis is 3-4-1, two straight losses to close a three-game trip. Shots were 26-24 St. Louis. Marchessault, Adam Edstrom, Jack Drury, Adam Wilsby, Jake Neighbours, Dylan Holloway, Pavel Buchnevich, and Brandon Carlo are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked.

Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist, his first goal of the season. Steven Stamkos, Roman Josi, and Wilsby each had two assists. Juuse Saros stopped 24 of 26. Philip Broberg scored. Jimmy Snuggerud scored on the power play. Binnington stopped 19 of 24.

Broberg, then a stick that became a shot

Broberg opened it at 6:21. Nashville turned it over on the right wall. Mason McTavish found Broberg in the slot. High glove. Broberg told NHL.com McTavish made a great play and he had space. McTavish's point streak is six games (four goals, four assists), both recaps said.

St. Louis took tripping at 8:11. Twenty-nine seconds later Binnington was called for throwing an object at the puck. Marchessault told NHL.com Filip Forsberg made a play at the net, he knew Binnington was not allowed to do that, and he thought it would be a 5-on-3 until they sent him in alone. The Associated Press recap said he has converted three of five regular-season penalty shots.

Forsberg made it 2-1 at 12:22. Stamkos missed a backhand. Forsberg wrapped at the left post around Binnington's right skate. He told NHL.com it comes and it goes, and it was a big goal at the time. Andrew Brunette told NHL.com St. Louis is the fastest-starting team in the league in the first period, and Nashville did not get to its game the right way early.

A shorty, a power-play answer, then the third

Edstrom scored short-handed at 7:05 of the second. Josi drove it in and fed him in front. The NHL recap called it his second short-handed goal in three games. Thirty-one seconds later Snuggerud scored on the power play from Neighbours at the side of the net. 3-2. Snuggerud told NHL.com short-handed goals from the other side can bring a bench down, and they turned it around quickly.

Ryan O'Reilly pushed it to 4-2 at 2:50 of the third, following his own rebound inside the left post. Drury made it 5-2 at 8:14, his first goal for Nashville, a Josi pass off his skate at the back post. The NHL recap said it was Drury's eighth game since the June 24 trade from Colorado.

Jim Montgomery told NHL.com the first and second felt good and the third cost them, odd-man rushes and decisions without the puck. Brunette liked the third and the penalty kills. Forsberg said they played more simple with the puck after a lot of turnovers. Carlo played his 700th NHL game. Buchnevich returned after missing Thursday in Minnesota for the birth of his child, the NHL recap said.

St. Louis hosts Winnipeg on Tuesday. Nashville visits Boston on Thursday.
