Panthers 34, Falcons 3: Lloyd Outscores Atlanta by Himself

September 20, 2026 - Atlanta - One week after Chicago dropped 59 on them, the Panthers flew into Mercedes-Benz Stadium and let Devin Lloyd play linebacker like the building still belonged to Luke Kuechly.

Lloyd returned one of his two interceptions 16 yards for a touchdown. He added a sack, nine tackles, two tackles for loss, and three passes defensed. The Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-3. Carolina is 1-1. Atlanta is 0-2. Lloyd outscored the Falcons 6-3 by himself.

Bryce Young completed 23 of 36 for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Two of them went to Darren Waller. Tetairoa McMillan caught five for 101. Young is 5-1 against Atlanta and this was Carolina's fourth straight win in the rivalry.

10-0, a 41-yarder, then the rest

Ryan Fitzgerald opened from 37. Chuba Hubbard finished the next scoring drive with a 3-yard catch. 10-0. Fitzgerald added a 25-yarder. Nick Folk answered from 41 at 1:07 of the second, Atlanta's only points, after 13 plays and 65 yards. Waller scored before the break. 20-3.

The Falcons never reached the red zone. Reuters noted they were the only offense in the league that had not done it through two weeks. Bijan Robinson ran 16 times for 72. Brian Robinson Jr. added 11 for 51. The yards were there in pieces. The finishes were not. Folk missed from 53.

Young's last touchdown was a 12-yarder to Waller at 9:38 of the third, capping 10 plays and 73 yards. 27-3. Jalen Coker caught eight for 66. Hubbard ran 12 times for 53 besides the opening catch. Lloyd's pick-six made it 34-3, Carolina's fifth 30-point road win in franchise history, per Reuters.

Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix Jr. (knee) were both inactive. Cooper Rush started and went 10 of 17 for 86 yards, two interceptions, and a lost fumble. Dave Canales said the defense expected Atlanta to run after last week's tape. It did. Carolina still took the ball away five times.

Strand's first pass, Lloyd's second pick

Falcons fans had been chanting for Jack Strand, the undrafted rookie from Minnesota State-Moorhead. He replaced Rush late in the third. The ovation lasted until the first throw.

Jaycee Horn got a hand on a ball for Jahan Dotson. Lloyd caught it at the Atlanta 16 and scored. He told reporters he knew he was going in after he made one man miss. The first interception had already gone 53 yards with a stiff-arm. The pick-six ended the argument at 34-3 with 2:58 left in the third. Strand later lost a fumbled snap. He finished 8 of 15 for 59 yards.

Bobby Okereke intercepted a pass Lloyd helped create with another breakup. Canales called it one of the most dominant linebacker games he had seen. Panthers.com noted that since sacks became official in 1982, the tackle-interception-touchdown-sack mix Lloyd put up in one game is rare air. Kuechly was in the press box. The comparison was going to happen whether Lloyd wanted it or not.

Young called it surreal. Lloyd has been a Panther for two games on a three-year, $45 million deal out of Jacksonville. Last week this defense set franchise records for points and rushing touchdowns allowed. This week Atlanta gained 286 yards and three points.
