Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1: San Diego Answers a Blowout With a Series Split

August 6, 2026 - Phoenix - A night after Mitch Bratt made San Diego look helpless, the Padres showed up looking like a different club.

The San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 at Chase Field, answering Wednesday's 10-4 loss and walking out of the desert with a series split that keeps both clubs tangled in the same NL wild-card fight.

A cleaner night after the mess

Bryan Rodriguez (3-2) got the win. Kohl Drake (0-1) took the loss in a start Arizona needed to be sharper after the previous night's offensive explosion. San Diego collected 12 hits and held Arizona to eight. The scoreboard never got away from the visitors the way it had 24 hours earlier.

That is the entire point of a four-game set in August. One blowout does not decide the series if the other club can throw strikes and string singles the next night. San Diego did both. Arizona, which had looked like the hotter wild-card club after Bratt's gem, spent Thursday trying to recreate the same crooked numbers and never got there.

Wild-card margin, still thin

San Diego (60-56) and Arizona (61-55) remain within a game of each other in the NL wild-card picture, with Los Angeles still far out in front of the West. Every midweek result between these two is really about September positioning. A split is not a moral victory for either side. It is the expected tax of playing each other when both are good enough to win on any given night.

Jackson Merrill, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Manny Machado remain the names that make San Diego dangerous when the lineup is in rhythm. Corbin Carroll and the rest of Arizona's core still make Chase Field a problem for anyone who leaves free bases. Thursday favored the visitors. The series as a whole favored neither.

AthX Engine angle

San Diego finished with 12 AthX Engine team fantasy points, sixth on the slate and a clean bounce-back from a night when Arizona had tied for the board lead at 19. One-run margins and five-run wins both show up honestly on AthX Engine when the counting stats are real. This one was a solid team win without a single pitcher or hitter running away with the full-slate leaderboard.

What it means

Splits like this are why the NL wild-card race stays noisy into September. Arizona still has the edge in the season series of the moment. San Diego still has the lineup to erase a bad night in a hurry. Both will see each other again before this is settled.
