Oilers 6, Hurricanes 5 (SO): McDavid and Draisaitl at Five, Nuge to End It

October 22, 2026 - Edmonton - Carolina led 4-2 after two. Connor McDavid scored 26 seconds into the third. Leon Draisaitl tied it on the power play. Juuso Valimaki put the Hurricanes back in front with 2:40 left. Then McDavid's saucer for Draisaitl hit Jesperi Kotkaniemi's skate and went five-hole. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins won the shootout. Rogers Place had a 6-5 it had no business needing.

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout. Edmonton is 8-1-1, three in a row, eight of nine. Carolina is 8-2-2, 2-1-1 on a five-game trip that ends in St. Louis on Saturday. Shots were 27-21 Carolina. Attendance was 16,420, per ESPN. Nugent-Hopkins, Seth Jarvis, Devon Levi, Juuso Valimaki, Jordan Martinook, William Carrier, Jake Walman, and Zach Hyman are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked. The Associated Press recap did not load a story. The NHL recap and the gamecenter landing did.

McDavid had two goals and three assists. Draisaitl had two goals and three assists. Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist in regulation, then the only shootout goal, in his season debut after a lower-body injury in practice on Sept. 28. Levi stopped 22 of 27 in 64:12. Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist. Jarvis scored in his season debut after shoulder surgery. Jackson Blake, Logan Stankoven, and Valimaki scored. Shayne Gostisbehere and Martinook each had two assists. Brandon Bussi stopped 16 of 21 in 65:00 and took the overtime loss.

Two power-play openers, then Carolina's second

Draisaitl made it 1-0 at 8:07, three seconds into a power play. He won the draw to McDavid. Evan Bouchard from the point. Draisaitl's tip over Bussi's glove.

Blake tied it at 10:30, six seconds into a Carolina power play, a rebound of Gostisbehere's shot past a prone Levi. Aho the other assist.

Aho put Carolina up 2-1 thirty seconds into the second, a breakaway backhand through Levi after he outraced Mattias Ekholm to a loose puck. Nugent-Hopkins tied it 2-2 at 4:20 on the power play, a cross-slot from McDavid, glove side. Draisaitl the other helper.

Jarvis made it 3-2 at 12:59. He spun off Bouchard in the right circle, deked Levi, and tucked it at the right post. Stankoven made it 4-2 at 17:53, a one-timer off a Nikolaj Ehlers steal from Walman below the goal line.

Jarvis, to NHL.com: you cannot take that many penalties against this team. Rod Brind'Amour said if you take away the five penalties, the game was pretty good. "The last one should never go in, everybody knows that."

4-2 becomes 4-4, then 5-5, then a shootout

McDavid scored 26 seconds into the third from Draisaitl and Walman, a one-timer inside the left circle. Draisaitl tied it 4-4 at 2:51, a power-play one-timer from Nugent-Hopkins in the low slot, McDavid the other assist. "You've got to win games like that, too," Draisaitl told NHL.com. "Obviously, way too eventful, for either team."

Ekholm had to be helped off in the opening minute of the third after his head hit the ice following a Carrier hit, the NHL recap said. Mike Babcock: it did not look pretty. "He's a bit of a Viking anyway, so he'll be OK in a couple of weeks or a week or 10 days or whatever."

Valimaki made it 5-4 at 17:20, blocker side from the high slot, Martinook and Gostisbehere on the play. First goal since Dec. 10, 2024, with Utah, the notes said. Hyman appeared to tie it with 1:36 left. Waived off, high stick. Eight seconds later McDavid's intended saucer for Draisaitl deflected off Kotkaniemi five-hole. 5-5 at 18:32.

Overtime solved nothing. In the shootout Levi stopped Gostisbehere, Andrei Svechnikov, and Jarvis. Bussi stopped McDavid and Draisaitl. Nugent-Hopkins went third for Edmonton and scored. "It kind of helps going third, too, because you can see the way he plays the first two," he told NHL.com. "Bussi is an unorthodox goalie, too, being a righty."

The NHL recap put McDavid at 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in a season-opening 10-game point streak, and said the five-point night was his 17th, past Marcel Dionne, Steve Yzerman, and Jari Kurri for fourth-most in NHL history. Draisaitl has seven goals in a five-game streak. Babcock called the matchup a gift and said Edmonton has to learn not to break when it bends.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for McDavid on a 10-game point streak, and for a Hurricanes trip that still has St. Louis. They are not the same number.
