Lightning 5, Islanders 3: Hagel's Hat Trick in 1:44 Left

October 10, 2026 - Elmont - It was 3-3 with less than two minutes left. Brandon Hagel went blocker side through a screen. Twenty-one seconds later he found the empty net. UBS Arena had watched New York climb out of 3-1. It did not watch a point.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Islanders 5-3. Tampa is 4-1-0, four in a row, the first half of a two-game New York trip, the Associated Press recap said. New York is 2-3-0, alternating wins and losses through five, the NHL recap said. Shots were 26-23 Tampa.

Hagel finished with three goals, an assist, six shots, and four blocks. The NHL recap called it his fourth NHL hat trick. Jake Guentzel scored twice. Max Crozier had two assists. Crozier is not seeded on AthX player pages, so the name stays unlinked. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 20 of 23. Ilya Sorokin stopped 21 of 25.

Tony DeAngelo had a goal and an assist. Unlinked. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Brayden Schenn scored. Matthew Schaefer put eight shots on Vasilevskiy and assisted on Pageau's goal.

Two in the first, then New York spent 40 climbing

Guentzel opened it at 5:45. Pageau turned it over on the right wall. Guentzel walked into the slot and beat Sorokin high blocker. Unassisted. 1-0.

Vasilevskiy got a blocker on a Bo Horvat breakaway at 11:14, the NHL recap said.

Hagel made it 2-0 at 15:42. Victor Hedman floated one through the neutral zone. Hagel cut across the crease and went high blocker. Crozier the other assist.

Islanders coach Pete DeBoer told NHL.com the start was self-inflicted. Over the last 40, he said, they went toe to toe with a good hockey team and worked back in. Measuring stick. They passed some of the tests. You cannot spot a team like that two goals.

Schaefer: not their best period, they adapted, the back half was better than the start.

DeAngelo, Guentzel, Pageau, then Schenn off Cernak

DeAngelo scored at 6:27 of the second, glove side from the point with Pageau screening. Ondrej Palat the assist. 2-1.

Guentzel's power-play goal at 7:54 made it 3-1. Nikita Kucherov from the right dot found him alone in front. Hagel the other helper.

Pageau cut it to 3-2 at 11:41, a deflection of Schaefer's shot. DeAngelo the other assist.

Schenn tied it at 19:53 on the power play. The NHL recap said Schaefer's one-timer was blocked, Matias Maccelli fed Horvat, Horvat found Schenn, and the redirection banked off Erik Cernak's stick and past Vasilevskiy's pad. Cernak is unlinked. The Associated Press recap said Schenn was trying to find Kyle Palmieri at the back post and the puck went in off Cernak. The landing still credits Schenn. 3-3.

Logan Stanley and Pontus Holmberg fought in the second, the Associated Press recap said. Stanley is unlinked.

Guentzel, on New York: stingy defensive team, gifted offensive players. Schaefer is a generational player who is up ice a lot. You cannot waver.

Hagel scored at 18:16 from Crozier and Ryan McDonagh. McDonagh is unlinked. 4-3. He completed it at 18:37 into the empty net from Anthony Cirelli and Kucherov. The NHL landing lists the empty-net modifier. 5-3.

Hagel told NHL.com it is a good feeling for the group. Not everything is the same here. New players. You want confidence early.

Tampa visits the Rangers on Tuesday. The Islanders host Vancouver that night.
