Lightning 3, Wild 2: Carlson's First Two in Tampa, 34 Saves from Hildeby

October 8, 2026 - Tampa - Thirty-six seconds after Anthony Cirelli tipped one, John Carlson scored his first goal as a Lightning defenseman. Benchmark International Arena had a 2-0 lead it would not give back, even after Minnesota made it 3-2.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2. Tampa is 3-1-0, three straight, a clean homestand. Minnesota is 2-1-1, two losses in a row. Shots were 36-35 Minnesota. Attendance was 19,092.

Carlson scored twice and put nine shots on net. Nikita Kucherov had two assists. Dennis Hildeby stopped 34 of 36 in his Tampa Bay debut after the July 1 trade from Toronto, the NHL recap said. Hildeby is unlinked.

Quinn Hughes had a goal and an assist. Blake Coleman scored on the power play. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 32 of 35. Coleman is unlinked.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper, on Carlson, to NHL.com: "Good for him. Because we need him to do that." Carlson signed a two-year, $17 million contract on July 1, the NHL recap said.

2-0 in 36 seconds, then Hughes through traffic

Cirelli redirected Erik Cernak's point shot at 5:26 of the first. Brandon Hagel the other assist. Cernak is unlinked. 1-0.

Carlson from the point at 6:02, a wrist Wallstedt did not see. Gage Goncalves the screen, the NHL recap said. Kucherov and Brayden Point on the play. Goncalves is unlinked. 2-0. Carlson: he got lucky. Good screen. Goalie-didn't-see-it kind of goal.

Minnesota coach John Hynes told NHL.com the Wild did not play fast enough off the bat, not enough intensity on wall plays and net fronts. Olli Maatta was a late scratch with a lower-body injury that came up after the morning skate. David Spacek drew in, one shot in 8:23. Both names stay unlinked. The AP recap also listed Nick Foligno out with an upper-body injury.

Hughes cut it to 2-1 at 2:32 of the second, a shot from the center point through traffic. Bobby Brink and Jared Spurgeon the helpers. Wallstedt, per NHL.com: it is hard when they get two quick ones. The second looked better. They had looks to tie it.

Power play 1-for-the-season, then Coleman makes it 3-2

Carlson's power-play one-timer from the high slot, Kucherov looking people off, Jake Guentzel the other assist. 3-1 at 4:55. It was Tampa Bay's first man-advantage goal of the season after 0-for-13 in the first three games, the NHL recap said. The AP recap used 0-for-14. The NHL recap's 0-for-13 is the number we are using for the drought talk. The box only cares that this one was a power-play goal.

Carlson: they talk about flipping coverages and sneaking into spots. Kuch looked people off. He got wide open in the middle.

Coleman beat Hildeby high glove from the left circle at 14:01, Kirill Kaprizov and Hughes. 3-2. Coleman told NHL.com they were not happy with the first period, losing battles, and you cannot put yourself in a hole against a good team.

The third had no goals. Hildeby, per NHL.com: fun, battling, chances shot off the ice, great job at the end by everyone. He played 59:37.

The NHL notes said Hughes (six points) and Spurgeon (four) both matched Ryan Suter for the longest season-opening point streak by a Wild defenseman, four games.

Minnesota visits Florida on Saturday. Tampa Bay visits the Islanders.

AthX Engine on nine shots from the point

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored Carlson at 15.40 (two goals, nine shots, three blocks, one power-play bonus). Hildeby is 14.20. Wallstedt is 9.20 in a loss. Hughes is 8.90. Coleman is 8.10. Spurgeon is 6.80. Cirelli is 6.40. Kucherov is 5.60.

Tampa Bay's team line is 16.60. Minnesota is 1.40. Thursday had ten finals. This recap is here because Hildeby's 34-save debut and Carlson's 15.40 sat just outside the six highest team-FP games.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a July signing who just scored twice, and for a Wild pair of defensemen still on a four-game point streak. They are not the same number.
