Kings 6, Rangers 3: Doughty's First Goal of the Year, in a Hurry

October 26, 2026 - New York - Taylor Ward had not played a game this season. James Reimer had signed a one-year deal on Sunday. Ward got behind the Rangers, took Drew Doughty's pass in stride, and beat Reimer on a breakaway 1:15 in. Madison Square Garden had 1-0 on the Kings' first shot, and it never got the start it wanted.

The Los Angeles Kings beat the New York Rangers 6-3. Los Angeles is 3-5-2, 3-1-0 on a five-game trip that ends in Chicago on Tuesday. New York is 7-6-1, a third straight loss and the first home loss of the year (6-1-0). Shots were 26-26. Attendance was 18,006. Doughty, Ward, Brandt Clarke, Joel Edmundson, Trevor Moore, Corey Perry, Joel Armia, Erik Gustafsson, Reimer, and Dylan Garand are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked.

Doughty had a goal and two assists, his first three-point night since Feb. 22, 2025. Artemi Panarin scored on the power play and added an assist. Alex Laferriere had two assists. Mikey Anderson scored. Darcy Kuemper stopped 23 of 26. J.T. Miller scored. Adam Fox scored on the power play in his 500th NHL game. Tye Kartye had a goal and an assist.

A moment of silence was held before puck drop for Ron Duguay, a Rangers favorite in the 1970s and 1980s who died last week, the Associated Press recap said.

Two shots, two goals, then a skate

Ward told NHL.com it started with a good D-zone breakout from Moore and Doughty. He tried to get his feet moving. Doughty made the pass. 1-0.

Clarke made it 2-0 at 4:52 on a delayed penalty. Armia threw a sharp-angle centering pass. Scott Laughton got a touch in front. Clarke scored from the left post. The NHL recap said Los Angeles scored on its first two shots for the first time since Feb. 7, 2021.

Miller cut it to 2-1 at 13:01. Kartye's shot went in off Miller's right skate. Doughty answered at 17:32, a one-timer from the point off Edmundson and Panarin. 3-1. Reimer left after three goals on eight shots. Garand started the second.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan told NHL.com he did not think enough guys were ready from the drop of the puck, and that he put Reimer in a tough spot. Miller told NHL.com they were not playing Rangers hockey, and that has been the case lately.

Panarin greets Garand, then four from the blue line

Panarin scored 1:30 into the second on the power play, a shot from the left circle with Laferriere screening. 4-1. Anderson made it 5-1 at 6:54. Perry won a faceoff at the left dot back to him. Slap shot. First of the season for Anderson. First point of the season for Perry.

Fox scored at 13:05 on New York's only power play. Pavel Dorofeyev dropped it to him in the slot. Alexis Lafrenière started it. 5-2.

Kartye scored 6-on-5 at 16:08 of the third from Sean Durzi. 5-3. Edmundson hit the empty net 29 seconds later from Doughty and Laferriere. Four of Los Angeles's six goals came from defensemen. The NHL recap said all 18 Kings skaters were on the ice for at least one Los Angeles goal.

Doughty told NHL.com he has not had a night like that in a minute. After Miller scored, he said the best teams he has played on get the next one instead of deflating. Kings coach Peter Laviolette told NHL.com they played fast, made good decisions, and attacked. He called Tuesday in Chicago a big game: 4-1 on the trip would put a 10-game segment one point under .500 after the start they had.

The NHL recap said Doughty moved past Dustin Brown into seventh on the Kings' all-time scoring list at 713 points. It was his 17th career three-point game, tied with Rob Blake for second among Kings defensemen.
