Giants 7, Braves 3: Devers' 30th and a Four-Run Sixth End Atlanta's Streak

A June rainout, a 30th homer, a streak gone

August 31, 2026 – Atlanta – This game belonged to June 18 until the rain said otherwise. Monday night at Truist Park, Rafael Devers hit his 30th homer of the year in the first inning, 403 feet to right, and the San Francisco Giants spent the next eight innings taking a series they were not supposed to steal.

Devers' 30th (403 feet) and a four-run sixth (Basabe homer, Hill's two-run double) ended Atlanta's seven-game win streak. Anthony Molina got the win. Bryce Elder took the loss.

The Atlanta Braves had won seven in a row. They are 82-56. San Francisco is 57-81. The Giants still finished the season series 5-1 against the NL East leaders.

Molina vs his old club

Anthony Molina (2-0) started for San Francisco. The Braves traded him at the deadline. This was his first start of the season, and he threw it in the park where he used to dress. Five innings, six hits, three earned, six strikeouts, no walks, one homer. Career high in punchouts. He left with the game tied, which is more than a lot of Giants starters have asked for in August.

Bryce Elder (8-8) went 5 1/3, eight hits, five earned, three walks, two homers. He had Devers in the first and Osleivis Basabe leading off the sixth. The rest of the damage came after he was gone.

Atlanta answered Devers immediately. Drake Baldwin doubled and scored on Matt Olson's groundout. Michael Harris II led off the second with his 23rd homer, 401 feet to center. 2-1, Braves, and Truist sounded like a club that expected to make it eight.

Cox's bunt, then Atlanta's last lead

Devers walked in the fifth. Bryce Eldridge reached. Jonah Cox dropped a bunt single to second that scored Devers. 2-2.

Baldwin singled Sean Murphy home in the bottom half. 3-2, Atlanta. That was the last time the Braves led. They went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left six on.

The sixth that ended the streak

Basabe led off the sixth with a solo shot to center, 409 feet. 3-3. Andrew Knizner and Nate Furman were on when Turner Hill, pinch-hitting for Drew Gilbert, doubled to right off Dylan Lee. Two runs. 5-3. Eldridge singled Hill home. 6-3.

Elder was already out. Lee faced three batters and retired one. Raymond Kerr threw the last 3 1/3 and allowed only Cox's ninth-inning solo (379 feet to left). By then the game was a bullpen drill.

Jason Foley threw 1 1/3 scoreless. Reiver Sanmartín threw 1 2/3 scoreless with two strikeouts. Dylan Smith finished the ninth. Four innings, no runs, one walk. The Giants staff struck out 10 and walked one.

Harris's homer was Atlanta's only extra-base answer after the second. Olson drove in the first run and then went quiet. The lineup that had won seven straight looked like a club playing a makeup on a Monday.

Devers finished 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs. That is a 30-homer season with on-base work around it. Basabe's fourth homer of the year started the sixth. Hill's pinch-hit double was the swing that turned a tie into a lead. Cox had the bunt and the last homer, two RBI, two different kinds of contact.

Atlanta used three pitchers. Elder threw 84 pitches. Lee threw 14 and allowed the Hill double. Kerr threw 34 and allowed the Cox homer. The Braves walked three and struck out seven. They did not get the shutdown inning after they took the 3-2 lead.

The inning log is a first-inning trade, a fifth-inning trade, then a sixth that did not trade back. Devers, 1-0. Olson, 1-1. Harris, 1-2. Cox's bunt, 2-2. Baldwin, 2-3. Basabe, 3-3. Hill, 5-3. Eldridge, 6-3. Cox again, 7-3. San Francisco went 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Atlanta went 2-for-9. That is the makeup in one comparison.

The Giants are 25 wins behind Atlanta and still took the season series. A June rainout in August does not care about the standings graphic.

What's next

Atlanta sends A.J. Smith-Shawver (0-0, 5.93) to Washington. San Francisco opens in Pittsburgh with Logan Webb (8-8, 3.72) against Paul Skenes (9-11, 3.79). Devers has four homers in his last eight games and five seasons with 30. The Braves have to start a new streak against a different division.
