The Deal
Valdez, 31, was the top starting pitcher left on the free-agent market. He won back-to-back Cy Young Awards (2024–25) and has been one of the most durable and dominant left-handers in the game. The Tigers had been searching for a frontline arm to slot behind Skubal; Valdez fills that role and gives Detroit a rotation built to contend in the AL Central.
Why the Tigers Wanted Him
Detroit's rotation was already anchored by Skubal. Adding Valdez gives the Tigers two ace-level arms, both under contract for 2026 and beyond. Hinch managed Valdez in Houston and knows how to deploy his sinker-heavy, ground-ball profile. The Tigers' defense and ballpark play well for a pitcher who keeps the ball on the ground.
AthX Impact
Valdez's move to Detroit could boost his fantasy and AthX value: more wins upside in a competitive division, a pitcher-friendly park, and a manager who knows his game. His price may rise as traders factor in the new contract and role. Use our when to buy and sell guide to time your trades.
