Flames 3, Hurricanes 2: Sharangovich With 4:28 Left

October 18, 2026 - Calgary - Morgan Frost floated a saucer across the slot. Yegor Sharangovich one-timed it as soon as it landed. Brandon Bussi's water bottle went with it. Scotiabank Saddledome had 4:28 left and a 3-2 lead against a club that had won seven in a row.

The Calgary Flames beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. Calgary is 2-6-0, first home win of the season, the NHL recap said. Carolina is 7-2-1 after a seven-game streak and a franchise-record five straight on the road. Shots were 36-34 Carolina. Attendance was 16,464, per ESPN. The Associated Press recap called Carolina the defending champion.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Nicolas Deslauriers, Eric Robinson, Zayne Parekh, Jake Middleton, Jordan Martinook, Sean Walker, Pyotr Kochetkov, Dustin Wolf, Adam Klapka, Kevin Bahl, and Jonathan Castagna are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked.

Frost had a goal and an assist in his 400th NHL game. Matvei Gridin scored his first of the season. Devin Cooley stopped 34 of 36 for his first win (1-2). Jalen Chatfield scored. Sebastian Aho and Jaccob Slavin assisted. Bussi stopped 31 of 34. Mark Jankowski was scratched with a lower-body injury, the NHL recap said. Deslauriers played in his place.

Kotkaniemi at 6:09, then 86 seconds that decided nothing

Scoreless through one. Cooley's last start was seven goals on 30 shots in Colorado on Oct. 8. Wolf had started the three after that, the Canadian Press recap said. Cooley told NHL.com he had been thinking too much, and the game is too fast to let the conscious brain decide, so he shut it off and started making saves.

Kotkaniemi opened it at 6:09 of the second, his second goal in as many games, lifting a rebound over Cooley's right pad. Deslauriers and Robinson the assists. Rod Brind'Amour told NHL.com that line created the loose pucks and played in the right end. The Canadian Press recap put it on Carolina's 19th shot.

Gridin tied it 1-1 at 18:30, a wrist from the high slot over Bussi's glove. Matt Coronato the lone assist, in his 200th NHL game. Gridin told NHL.com it was his best game of the season and he liked how his feet moved.

Frost made it 2-1 at 19:39 on the power play. Parekh's pass, tap in, Joel Farabee starting the three-way play for his team-leading fifth assist. Ryan Huska told NHL.com they need the power play to score because they do not find the net easily.

Chatfield answered 17 seconds later, at 19:56. Shot from the far boards through traffic, top corner over Cooley's glove. Slavin and Aho. 2-2 after two. The Canadian Press recap called it a long shot from the blue line through a maze of bodies.

The saucer that ended the streak

Martinook told NHL.com the third felt like Calgary turned the tides, and Carolina gave up too much. Huska said making Carolina go back for pucks on a back-to-back mattered, and it was nice to see work rewarded against the standard.

Sharangovich scored at 15:32. Frost the saucer. Middleton the other assist. Second goal of the season. Calgary held on. Huska said Frost, Sharangovich, and that group are the difference makers they need in close games. Brind'Amour told NHL.com nobody feels sorry for you, they still created a ton of offense, hit three or four posts, and the game could have looked different, but they were giving up way too much.

Carolina visits Vancouver on Tuesday. Calgary hosts Minnesota on Thursday.
