August 10, 2026 - Los Angeles - Tarik Skubal finally got a home start in Dodger blue. Five innings later he was losing 3-2, and the loudest swing of his night belonged to a Royals outfielder who treated the back-to-back Cy Young winner like a mid-rotation lefty.
The Los Angeles Dodgers still found a 6-5 win, their second in 10 games, because Shohei Ohtani stole a base he had not stolen since May 16 and Freddie Freeman singled him home. Skubal's debut at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium will live in the recap. The seventh inning won the game.
Caglianone owned the new ace, then Muncy answered
Jac Caglianone drove in all three runs off Skubal, including a homer, and the left-hander's second start since the Detroit trade looked like a work night instead of a coronation. Five innings, four hits, three earned, two walks, six strikeouts. He left trailing 3-2. Kansas City had scored once in the first and twice in the third. Ohtani's RBI double in the third was the Dodgers' first real answer.
Bobblehead night belonged to Max Muncy, and he paid the crowd back in the sixth. Three-run double. 5-3, Los Angeles, and the building finally sounded like a club that remembered how to win. Noah Cameron had lasted 5 2/3 and given up four earned on six hits after three straight starts with one earned run across 23 innings. The sixth was the inning that wrecked that streak.
It did not wreck the Royals. Kyle Isbel hit a two-run homer in the seventh and tied it at 5-5. Kansas City had scored in the first, the third, and now the seventh. Three different innings, three different looks at a Dodgers staff that was supposed to feel deeper the minute Skubal took the ball. That is the version of this Los Angeles season that has been showing up since mid-July: a lead, a swing the other way, a packed house checking the scoreboard like it owes them money.
Ohtani runs. Freeman does not miss.
Ohtani singled. Then he stole second, his first steal since May 16. Freeman, already sitting on a three-hit night, singled him home with one out. 6-5. The go-ahead run scored on a single, not a 110-mph homer, which is how you win games when your new ace just handed the ball over down a run.
Edwin Díaz finished the ninth. One inning, no hits, one strikeout, the save. Freeman's three hits and two RBI will not trend like Skubal's first night in this ballpark. They are why Los Angeles is 71-48 instead of 70-49. Ohtani finished with a double, a single, a steal, two runs, and an RBI. That is a leadoff man deciding a one-run game without needing to leave the yard.
Kansas City is 49-71 and has lost four of five. Caglianone's three-RBI night against Skubal is a keep. Isbel's tying homer is a keep. Neither survived Freeman's seventh-inning single. A club that can take a 3-2 lead on a Cy Young winner and still leave town with a one-run loss is living the same August the Dodgers just escaped for a night.
Two wins in 10 is not a turnaround. It is a pulse.
Los Angeles is 8-12 since July 19. Monday was the second win in the last 10. That is the context Skubal walked into, and it is why a 6-5 homestand opener against a last-place club felt heavier than the opponent. The rotation addition was supposed to look like a statement. It looked like a 3-2 deficit after five. The lineup and the seventh inning had to finish the statement for him.
I am not burying Skubal after one home start. Six strikeouts in five innings against a club that put three on the board is not a crisis. Leaving the game behind, on bobblehead night, in a park that has been waiting to see him, is just a reminder that the trade does not pitch the sixth and seventh by itself. Ohtani running again is the more interesting sentence. If that steal is the start of something, this offense gets a gear it has been missing since May.
AthX Engine angle
Los Angeles finished with 10 AthX Engine team fantasy points, tied with Texas and Philadelphia for sixth on the Monday board. Ohtani led the Dodgers' bats at 8 hitting fantasy points. Skubal's five innings were worth 7 pitching fantasy points, a fine line that did not come with a decision. Caglianone's three-RBI night against him was worth 8 hitting fantasy points on the other side.
