Chiefs 31, Broncos 10: Walker Steals Mahomes' Return Night

September 14, 2026 - Kansas City - Patrick Mahomes came back from a torn ACL and LCL in a brace. The first Chiefs touchdown of 2026 was still his legs. The rest of the night belonged to the new back.

Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards on 23 carries in his Kansas City debut. He scored twice. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday Night Football and snapped a three-game skid against the club that took their AFC West crown.

Mahomes was 15 of 27 for 184 yards, two passing scores, one pick, and a 15-yard scramble that opened the scoring. He did not need to be perfect. Walker made sure of that.

A 15-yard reminder, then a new engine

Nine months after the December 14 knee injury, Mahomes' first red-zone answer was a scramble. ESPN's Next Gen Stats clocked him at 15.8 mph on the run, faster than his average rush speed last season. Harrison Butker kicked it through. 7-0.

Denver tied it. Bo Nix found Evan Engram from 19 yards. 7-7.

Kansas City answered with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that Walker carried. It ended when Mahomes hit Rashee Rice, back from a knee injury of his own. Rice bounced off two Broncos and finished a 13-yard touchdown. 14-7 at the break.

Walker already had the look of a different offense. Denver had not allowed 173 rushing yards to a single back in all of 2025. He did it on opening night in Arrowhead.

Sixty yards of missed tackles

The second half started the way Kansas City wanted the whole season to start. Walker's fourth carry of the half went 60 yards. Missed tackles stacked behind him. Butker's extra point made it 21-7 with 7:34 left in the third.

Denver got a piece back. Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes deep in Chiefs territory. Wil Lutz hit from 31. 21-10.

Mahomes' answer was a 59-yard strike to Travis Kelce. Three catches, 71 yards on the night. That set up Butker from 28. 24-10 after three.

Nix's fumble on the next possession ended the argument. Mahomes hit rookie running back Emmett Johnson for 26 yards on third down, first-and-goal at the 2. Then the fun one: Mahomes lined up in a three-point stance next to backup Justin Fields, took the snap, and shoveled it to Walker. Untouched. 31-10, 14:39 left in the fourth.

Nix finished 17 of 28 for 131 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and that fumble. J.K. Dobbins led Denver with 36 yards on eight carries. The Broncos finished with 176 total yards, per ESPN. Kansas City had the ball, the back, and the building.

Zach Allen still wrecked the pocket: two sacks, three solo tackles. It did not move the scoreboard. Felix Anudike-Uzomah forced a fumble. Mansoor Delane picked Nix. L'Jarius Sneed led Kansas City with seven solos. The takeaways were enough. The run game was the story.
