September 27, 2026 - Denver - Matthew Stafford looked left for Kyren Williams. Talanoa Hufanga was already there. Sixty-six yards later he had broken Stafford's tackle and given the Denver Broncos the lead. The Rams took it back. Bo Nix took it last. Denver 30, the Los Angeles Rams 26, Sunday night at Empower Field.
Denver is 2-1. Los Angeles is 1-2. Sean Payton called it the first time in franchise history the Broncos had erased double-digit second-half deficits in consecutive weeks. They trailed 16-0 at the half with 67 yards. They scored 30 after it.
Nix completed 17 of 34 for 186 yards, two passing scores, one interception, and the 1-yard winner. Stafford went 30 of 55 for 390 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks, per nflverse. Williams had 15 carries for 88 and 6 catches for 70. Davante Adams caught 7 for 137. Tyler Higbee had 8 for 62 and Denver's first allowed touchdown.
16-0 on field goals, a Lutz miss, and 67 yards
After an opening punt trade, Stafford found Higbee from 5. 7-0, 4:55 left in the first. Will Lutz then hit the left upright from 43.
Harrison Mevis made 36, 35, and 40 as the half expired. The Rams reached the Denver 15 and left with three after delay of game, illegal formation, and pass interference. They outgained Denver 273-67. Nix was quiet. The building booed.
Xavier Smith fielded a punt at the goal line to start the third. Kolbe Katsis answered 28 yards to the Rams 42. Nix hit Pat Bryant from 5, then Jaylen Waddle on the two-point try between Josh Wallace's hands. 16-8.
Emmanuel Forbes Jr. drew unsportsmanlike conduct that wiped a muffed-punt pin. The Rams say it cost 39 yards of field position. Nix hit Nate Adkins from 8. Bryant caught the second two-pointer. 16-16, 2:15 left in the third.
Four lead changes, two Hufanga picks
Wallace intercepted Nix and returned it 26 yards. Hufanga sacked Stafford on third down. Mevis from 48. 19-16 Rams, 8:40 left.
Adams ripped 42. Three plays later Stafford threw early to Williams. Hufanga went 66. 23-19 Denver, 4:49 remaining. Next Gen Stats, per the Broncos, moved the win probability 55.4 percent on that play.
Stafford answered in one shot: 48 yards to Konata Mumpfield. 26-23, 3:38 left.
Nix faced second-and-20. Bryant gained 39. Troy Franklin gained 21. Wallace's pass interference on third-and-6 from the 11 kept it alive. Quentin Lake's illegal use of hands did it again from the 5. Officials overturned Nix's two-yard pylon dive because his right foot landed out at the 1. Two plays later he went over the pile. 30-26, 47 seconds left.
Stafford got to the Denver 14. A false start pushed it to the 19. Hufanga intercepted the last heave in the end zone.
Hufanga finished with two interceptions, the pick-six, a sack, five tackles, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit, and three passes defensed, per the Broncos. He had dropped two interceptions earlier, AP wrote, and still finished as the night. Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto, and Eyioma Uwazurike all had sacks. Mevis made four field goals.
The Rams lost more than the lead. Terrance Ferguson (ankle) and Colby Parkinson (shoulder) left late in the first quarter. Ferguson caught 9 yards, got hurt again, and did not return. Jaylen Watson's shoulder ended his night at halftime. Konata Mumpfield still had 4 catches for 93 and the 48-yard score. It was not enough after 16-0.
Payton called it a tale of two halves for a second straight week. Denver went from 2-of-6 on third down to 5-of-7 after the break in the Broncos' telling. Stafford had 9 yards and a 50.3 rating in the third, per the club. Four lead changes in the last nine minutes. Nix still dove last.
Puka Nacua was not the story of this box. The Rams had Adams, Williams, and Higbee and still gave a 16-point lead back.
Denver hosts in Week 4 on Oct. 4. The Rams visit Philadelphia that afternoon. Payton used the word gutsy. Nix said it felt like their DNA. McVay's club thought it had a third-down stop at the 11 and another at the 5. Both became first downs by penalty. Then Nix's pylon dive came back. Then the pile. Then Hufanga again. Sixteen-nothing is supposed to travel home. It did not.
AthX Engine on a 97-point safety night
AthX Engine NFL scoring already has the Week 3 lines in. Hufanga's two picks, the defensive score, and the sack land at 97.50, the top total in this game and the loudest IDP line of the leftover batch. Wallace is 46.50. Williams is 42.50. Stafford is 42.45. Allen is 41.00. Nix is 36.63. Denver's team line is 70.50.
Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay after a safety wrecked a 16-0 lead on national television. They move together. They are not the same number.
