Broncos 23, Chargers 17: Three Takeaways, Then Lutz From 19

October 11, 2026 - Inglewood - Justin Herbert needed a yard at his own 41. Que Robinson met him. Eight plays later Bo Nix found Courtland Sutton from 5. 17-17. The Denver Broncos still had two takeaways left, and the winless Los Angeles Chargers did not have an answer for either.

Denver won 23-17 at SoFi Stadium. The Broncos are 3-2. The Chargers are 0-5. Nix went 16 of 27 for 123 yards and the Sutton score. No picks. One sack. Two fumbles, one lost. Sean Payton had taken the play-calling back from Davis Webb earlier in the week, ESPN said. The passing game still finished at 4.6 yards an attempt.

The defense scored 13 points off takeaways, the Broncos wrote, and added the fourth-down stop that does not count as a turnover on the sheet. Pat Surtain II (ankle) and Riley Moss (ribs) did not play. Denver still sacked Herbert five times.

Dobbins from 2, then a 17-10 hole

Evan Engram caught 34 yards after Talanoa Hufanga forced a fumble, the Gazette said. J.K. Dobbins scored from 2. 7-0. It was Dobbins's first touchdown since Oct. 5, 2025, at Philadelphia, nine games without one. He ran 18 times for 68 and caught two for 6.

Herbert tied it in the third. He swept 23 yards to the Denver 7 behind Charlie Kolar, ESPN said, then hit Hayden Rucci from 7 for Rucci's first career score. 10-10. Tuli Tuipulotu then stripped Nix on a scramble and recovered. Kimani Vidal ran 42 on the next snap. 17-10 Chargers with 57 seconds left in the third.

Herbert finished 14 of 24 for 121, one score, and one pick. He ran six times for 54. Omarion Hampton had 14 carries for 33. Vidal ran eight for 57 and the long score. Four rookies were trying to protect Herbert, ESPN said, on a line already thin.

Robinson, Allen, Jones

Robinson's fourth-down stop at 10:27 of the fourth set up Sutton. 17-17 at 8:53. On the next Chargers snap from their 32, Zach Allen strip-sacked Herbert. Robinson recovered at the 23. Denver reached fourth-and-goal from the 1 and kicked. Lutz from 19 at 5:07. 20-17.

Herbert faced fourth-and-6 at his 31. Brandon Jones intercepted him and returned it 7 yards to the 34, the Gazette said. Lutz from 36 at 1:08. 23-17. The Broncos listed that kick as 37 in one local recap. nflverse and ESPN scoring plays have 36. We are using 36.

Nix's only completion longer than 16 besides the Engram 34 was the rest of a 123-yard afternoon. Sutton caught two for 18 and the score. Jaylen Waddle had two for 19. Engram finished four for 55. Nik Bonitto had two sacks. D.J. Jones added a sack and a forced fumble.

Jim Harbaugh lost two challenges on the 10-3 drive, ESPN said, and sits 16 of 45 on challenges in his NFL career. The Chargers also started 0-5 in 2023, the year before he arrived. They are there again.

AFC West math after a 123-yard passing night

Denver got its first division win. The offense did not earn a parade. The front did. Three takeaways, five sacks, a stuffed sneak. Nix can live with 123 if Allen and Jones keep handing him the ball at the 23. The Broncos led for nearly 40 minutes before Herbert's 14-play, 73-yard drive tied it, the club said, then fell behind on Vidal's 42-yarder and still won. That is the 2026 Denver pattern in one afternoon: the skill group stalls, the front does not.

Los Angeles visits Kansas City next. An 0-5 club with a patched line and 121 passing yards is not a projection anyone wanted in August. It is the box from Sunday.
