Blue Jays 5, Astros 4: Ernie Clement's 10th-Inning Homer Steals the Series

August 5, 2026 - Houston - Extra innings in Houston usually belong to the home club. On Wednesday, Ernie Clement borrowed them.

Clement's two-run homer in the 10th lifted the Toronto Blue Jays past the Houston Astros 5-4, giving Toronto two of three in the series and handing the AL West leaders another reminder that August nights do not care about standings alone.

From 3-0 down to level

Houston starter Hunter Brown was excellent early. He did not allow a hit until Myles Straw doubled with one out in the sixth. Jose Altuve had already gone deep, and Christian Walker and LaMonte Wade Jr. had stacked RBI hits for a 3-0 lead. Brown finished with three runs on three hits over six innings, the kind of start that usually wins.

Toronto refused to leave quietly. Kazuma Okamoto's two-out single scored Straw to make it 3-1. Jesús Sánchez then tied it with a two-run homer to right, sending a high fastball into the seats and rewriting the night in one swing.

Jameson Taillon, making his Blue Jays debut after a Sunday trade from the Cubs, allowed three runs in four innings. Not a fairy-tale first start. Good enough that the bullpen and the lineup still had a game to steal.

The 10th: Clement, then chaos

The game sat 3-3 entering the 10th with the automatic runner on second. Clement jumped the first pitch from Bennett Sousa (0-1) into left field for a two-run shot and a 5-3 lead. It was the kind of first-pitch aggression managers preach and hitters only look smart for when it clears the wall.

Yordan Alvarez led off Houston's 10th with a single that scored the automatic runner and cut it to 5-4. Alvarez tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out. The Astros challenged. The call stood. Manager Joe Espada was ejected for arguing. Chase Lee then retired Altuve and Daulton Varsho for his first save.

Louis Varland (4-4) earned the win with a scoreless ninth. The final three outs were messy, loud, and exactly how road series get stolen in August.

West race, East scramble

Houston (59-57) still led the AL West after the loss, but the margin remains thin with Texas and Seattle within reach. The Astros went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left the tying run on the table after Alvarez's aggressive baserunning.

Toronto (54-61) is further from the AL East race, which is why nights like this matter more as proof of life than as standings math. Taking two of three in Houston with a new starter in the mix is the kind of series a club points to when it talks about playing better down the stretch.

AthX Engine angle

Toronto finished with 9 AthX Engine team fantasy points. Brown's quality start still graded out at 15 pitching FP even in a no-decision, a reminder that fantasy boards and win-loss records do not always agree. Extra-inning homers do what they always do: they decide both.

What it means

Clement's swing was the headline. The larger point is that Houston keeps playing close games in a division that will not forgive many more of them. Toronto leaves town with a series win and a debut in the books. Both clubs will take the next series more seriously because of how this one ended.
