Blue Jays 10, Rays 5: Okamoto Sets the Toronto Rookie Homer Mark

August 18, 2026 - St. Petersburg - Kazuma Okamoto hit one 442 feet to left-center in the fifth, and the Toronto Blue Jays had a new rookie home run record. Eric Hinske's mark was gone. The Tampa Bay Rays were already trailing 6-3. After Okamoto, they trailed 7-3, then 8-3, then 10-3, and a first-place club went home 10-5 in the series opener.

Alejandro Kirk went 3-for-6 with a double, a two-run homer, and three RBI. Josh Smith hit a two-run shot in the seventh. George Springer had three hits. Ernie Clement scored three times. Toronto piled up 17 hits. José Soriano (10-6) lasted 5 2/3 innings, nine hits, three runs. It was enough.

The Blue Jays have won 13 of 19. The Rays are still the AL's best record at 75-50. Tuesday was the night the visitor wrote the headline.

Two in the first, then Kirk keeps adding

Kirk scored on Springer's single in the first. Jesús Sánchez doubled Springer home. 2-0. Nick Martinez (12-4) had held Toronto to one run over three prior games this year. Through four batters he had already matched that.

Kirk's homer in the third went 414 feet to left-center, Nathan Lukes on. 4-0. In the fourth Kirk beat out an infield single, Clement scoring, Brett Bateman to third. Martinez's wild pitch scored Bateman. 6-0. Kirk had a double, a homer, and a single. He did not get the triple. He did not need it.

Tampa Bay's fourth was the pushback. A Soriano wild pitch scored Ryan Vilade. Taylor Walls singled Cedric Mullins and Richie Palacios home. 6-3. That was as close as it got.

Okamoto's 25th, then Smith’s two-run shot

Steven Matz inherited the fifth. Okamoto hit the first meaningful pitch of the inning 442 feet. Rookie record. 7-3. Bateman singled Clement home. 8-3. Jesse Scholtens threw four innings of relief and still gave up Smith's two-run homer in the seventh, 357 feet to right, Clement scoring again. 10-3.

Clement scored three times on a night he did not drive anyone in. That is a table-setter doing the job. Springer went 3-for-4 with a walk, a steal, a double, and the first RBI. Kirk's 12 AthX Engine hitting fantasy points were the loudest Toronto line. Okamoto's record is the one that travels.

Line: Blue Jays 10 runs on 17 hits; Rays 5 runs on 13 hits, 1 error; Soriano 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER.

Tampa Bay added two in the eighth on sacrifice flies from Mullins and Palacios, Yandy Díaz and Liam Hicks scoring. 10-5. Matt Waldron and Spencer Miles finished it. The Rays had 13 hits and still lost by five because they spent the first three innings watching Kirk and Springer put the game on a shelf.

A first-place series that started loud for the visitor

Toronto is 62-65. Tampa Bay is 75-50. One 10-5 does not flip the AL East. It does tell you the Blue Jays' recent 13-of-19 is real enough to take a bite out of the league's best record on the road.

Max Scherzer (1-5, 6.59 ERA) starts Wednesday. Drew Rasmussen (12-5, 2.78) goes for Tampa Bay. That is a different argument. Tuesday belonged to a rookie first baseman who now owns the franchise's rookie homer record, a catcher who missed only a triple, and a lineup that scored in five different innings.

I would not bury Martinez after one 3 2/3. I would not pretend 17 hits was a fluke either. Okamoto has 25. Hinske does not have the record anymore. The Rays have to win the next one if this series is going to look like a first-place homestand.

AthX Engine angle

Toronto finished with 18 AthX Engine team fantasy points, tied with Cleveland for second on Tuesday's slate behind only Milwaukee's 22-0. Kirk scored 12 hitting fantasy points. AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) graded the 17-hit night as a team card, with Kirk's three extra-base chances doing the individual lifting.
