Bears 59, Panthers 37: Highest-Scoring Opener the League Has Seen

September 13, 2026 - Charlotte - Ben Johnson said he slept well the night before. By the fourth quarter, nobody in Bank of America Stadium was sleeping.

Caleb Williams threw for 269 yards and two scores, ran for 65 and two more, and the Chicago Bears beat the Carolina Panthers 59-37. Combined points: 96. That is the highest-scoring season opener in NFL history.

D'Andre Swift ran 18 times for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Kyle Monangai added 100 yards on 10 carries, including a 61-yard burst. Chicago piled up 552 yards, 291 of them on the ground, and scored eight touchdowns. Cairo Santos went 8-for-8 on extra points and added a 40-yard field goal.

31-24, and a diving pick at the gun

Williams looked in command early. He hit Cole Kmet for a 22-yard touchdown. He scrambled. He hit the easy throws that vanished last year: Kalif Raymond caught eight for 84, Luther Burden III went 5-for-5 for 63, Rome Odunze had two for 52.

Carolina kept answering. Bryce Young was 23 of 37 for 361 yards, three touchdowns, and a pick. Jalen Coker caught eight for 138 and two scores. Chuba Hubbard scored twice, once through the air and once from 2 yards.

Santos from 40 and Ryan Fitzgerald from 44 left it 24-24 late in the first half. Williams then capped an 80-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown run. 31-24, 22 seconds left. Rookie corner Malik Muhammad dove for an interception with five seconds on the clock. Halftime belonged to Chicago, barely.

Williams' first-half line, per the Bears: 196 passing yards, one passing touchdown, 52 rushing yards, two rushing scores, 136.5 rating.

The third quarter that ended the argument

Hubbard's 2-yard run tied it 31-31 with 9:02 left in the third. Carolina still had a path. Then Derrick Brown hit Williams late. Roughing the passer turned third-and-20 from the 21 into first down at the 11. Swift scored from a yard. 38-31.

Tetairoa McMillan fumbled on the next Carolina drive. Williams found Jahdae Walker wide open. 52-31 with 6:27 left. Monangai's 61-yarder was in that same stretch of unanswered Chicago scores. Young hit Coker from 8 yards to make it 52-37. Swift's 28-yard run closed it at 59-37.

Chicago's six rushing touchdowns tied a team record. Williams, Swift, and Monangai combined for 289 rushing yards. Montez Sweat and Kentavius Street each sacked Young. Dillon Thieneman had eight solos. Carolina's Devin Lloyd matched him. It did not matter. The Bears' 59 points are a franchise record for a season opener and the second-most they have scored in a regular-season game, behind 61 against Green Bay in 1980.

Young's 361 yards were real. So was the 59. This was not a defensive masterpiece. It was Ben Johnson's offense in year two, on the first Sunday, with the volume turned all the way up.
