49ers 41, Chargers 17: Cowing's 83-Yard Return Sparks a SoFi Rout

August 20, 2026 - Inglewood - JK Scott's punt traveled 52 yards to the San Francisco 17. Jacob Cowing caught it, broke left, and did not stop until SoFi's end zone was behind him. Eighty-three yards. 17-3, 49ers. One return that sounded like a roster argument.

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Chargers 41-17. Brock Purdy and Justin Herbert both made their 2026 preseason debuts. Neither stayed long. The rest of the night belonged to backups, special teams, and a Chargers offense that finished with eight punts and eight first downs.

Purdy, Herbert, then the second quarter tilt

Purdy opened with one drive: 4 of 6 for 29 yards, three early targets to rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. He called it useful for huddle, pocket, and getting hit. Mac Jones took over for the rest of the half and finished 6 of 13 for 89 yards.

Herbert's first series was a three-and-out: 1 of 2, a 9-yard completion to Charlie Kolar. Cameron Dicker later hit a 21-yard field goal for Los Angeles's first points. That was the Chargers' highlight for a long stretch.

San Francisco led 20-3 at halftime. Eddy Pineiro hit from 48 and 45. Sincere McCormick scored from 7 yards. Cowing's return sat in the middle of that surge. Christian McCaffrey warmed up and did not play. Kyle Shanahan called it tightness and said McCaffrey would practice if it were a regular-season week.

Martinez answered a pick-six, then piled on

Junior Colson intercepted Adrian Martinez and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown in the third. Dicker's extra point missed. 20-9. Martinez answered with a 14-play drive capped by Khalil Herbert's 1-yard plunge. He later scored on a 9-yard keeper and threw a 17-yard touchdown to Jordan Watkins in the fourth.

Trey Lance, the former 49ers first-rounder, was 10 of 16 for 73 yards for Los Angeles. DJ Uiagalelei hit Jerand Bradley for a 28-yard score late, and Evan Svoboda converted the two-point try. Final margin still 41-17. Jim Harbaugh said the Chargers got outplayed and beat themselves in all three phases. Left tackle Branson Taylor left in the second and did not return.

Stribling and KhaDarel Hodge each caught four passes for 46 yards. McCormick led rushers with 53 yards on six carries. San Francisco outgained Los Angeles 321-229 and held the ball for nearly 33 minutes.

Cowing's 83-yard punt-return touchdown is a special-teams score. McCormick's 7-yard rushing TD is 6 plus rush yards. Pineiro's 48- and 45-yard field goals are strong kicker scores under AthX Engine distance rules. Martinez's rushing TD and 17-yard TD pass both count. Purdy's and Herbert's short debuts are small passing lines, not season statements. Preseason games are not stored as AthX Engine weekly lines yet.
